What Are Neck Related Headaches?

Aches, pains and tension can arise from the neck to give you headaches. These headaches can cause pain anywhere in the head but especially affect the base of the skull (top of your neck), the front of your head (behind your eyes) and by your temples on the side of your head.

They often result in a chronic throbbing ache which can be mild or severe, and can last for a few hours or the whole day.

Migraines, on the other hand, are a type of headache that are usually more severe than a typical headache. A migraine typically causes a throbbing or pulsing pain on one side of the head and for some people they’re accompanied by nausea, vomiting or sensitivity to light and sound.

Some people experience an aura (a visual disturbance such as flashing lights or blurred vision) before their migraine.

Migraine affects around one in seven people in the UK, with women three times more likely to experience it than men. In a survey conducted by the charity Migraine Action, 90% of people who experience migraines reported that the condition has a negative impact on their quality of life, while 65% reported that it affected their ability to work.

Both headaches and migraines can have a significant impact on your quality of life. They can cause discomfort, affect concentration and interfere with daily activities.

The good news is that chiropractic can help with neck related headaches and to prevent migraines.

Your chiropractor in Eastbourne will uniquely tailor your treatment plan to suit you. They may use massage, home stretches, exercises and acupuncture alongside chiropractic adjustments and self-help tips.

Chiropractic Treatment for Headaches FAQs

What to Expect When you See a Chiropractor for Headaches

The General Chiropractic Council explain that chiropractors are trained to use a range of techniques when treating their patients.

Chiropractors are best known for using manual methods of care, including spinal and joint manipulations (also referred to as ‘adjustments’) but may also use other hands-on or instrument-assisted approaches.

At our chiropractic clinic in Eastbourne, you’ll find that our chiropractors may share lifestyle tips, dietary or nutritional advice, exercises and strategies to manage stress and discomfort to help you manage your headaches and migraines.

Before starting treatment, your chiropractor will assess your symptoms to determine if chiropractic treatment is right for you. They’ll assess your neck, shoulders and posture to determine which techniques are likely to help, and whether there are any alternative or medical options that would suit you.

Chiropractors are trained to recognise when chiropractic treatment will not help a medical condition and will make a referral to your GP or another healthcare professional, if necessary.

Some people want treatment on their first visit. We can’t guarantee that, because we need to assess you first! However, if you want treatment on your first visit then mention it to your chiropractor at the start of the visit and they’ll do everything they can to help.

Does Chiropractic Treatment for Headaches Hurt?

Your chiropractic treatment will be tailored to your specific needs and preferences. Some of the people who see us don’t like the pops and clicks, whereas others prefer a more physical approach.

Chiropractic treatment should always be within your personal comfort levels.

What Causes the Cracks with Chiropractic Treatment for Headaches?

Chiropractic treatment is famous for pops and clicks.

However, they’re not essential. Everything we do is centred around your needs and preferences. If you’re worried about the noises then rest assured, there are lots (and lots) of no-clicky techniques that will help (as well as muscle work, exercises and advice).

WARNING PHYSICS HERE: These noises happen when little air bubbles (nitrogen gas) form in the joints. The bubbles form due to the joint freeing off, which creates more space. The joint fluid (liquid) needs to expand (forming a gas) to fill the space. This creates a “pop”.

The loudness of your pops and cracks are not necessarily that relevant.

Did you know: Some of the chiropractors on YouTube have been known to add extra “pops” and “cracks” to their videos in post-production, as treatments aren’t always that noisy.

How Long Does It Take to Get Better from Headaches?

Chiropractors are well known for treating headaches.

The question on your mind, though, is likely, "How long will it take for me to feel better?" The answer is, it varies.

Each person's body responds differently to treatment. The severity of the pain and the underlying condition will affect how fast you get better. However, many patients begin to feel improvement after just a few sessions. Long-lasting changes tend to take longer, weeks or months.

At Lushington Chiropractic we’ll discuss your prognosis and treatment plan with you. Your chiropractor will tailor your treatment to fit with your goals.

Even if you just want a short burst of care to help you out of a crisis that’s fine. Just let your chiropractor know so they can tailor your treatment plan to suit you.

Acupuncture for Headaches in Eastbourne

Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment that can help your headaches.

Self-Help Tips for Headaches and Migraine

Headaches can be caused by a variety of factors including stress, dehydration, poor sleep habits, and even certain foods, although they can also be a sign of an underlying medical condition.

By practicing good self-care habits and paying attention to our bodies, we can often prevent headaches from occurring in the first place and maintain optimal health. Remember, headaches are a common experience and you are not alone in dealing with them.

Below we have outlined some of the main ways in which we can help ourselves to manage our own pain.

Exercise for Headaches

Exercise can help relieve headaches in several ways:

Promotes Blood Flow

Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, which can help ease headache pain. When blood flow is increased, it helps to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the brain, reducing inflammation and tension that can contribute to headaches.

Reduces Stress

Regular exercise can help reduce stress levels, which is a common trigger for headaches. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural painkillers that can also improve mood and reduce anxiety.

Releases Tension

Exercise can help release tension in the muscles of the neck, shoulders, and back, which are common areas where tension headaches originate. Stretching, yoga, and other low-impact exercises can be particularly effective for this.

Improves Sleep Quality

Exercise can help improve the quality of sleep, which is essential for managing headaches. A regular exercise routine can help regulate sleep patterns, resulting in better-quality sleep that can reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches.

It’s important to note that while exercise can be helpful for relieving headaches, it’s important not to overdo it. Intense physical activity can actually exacerbate headache pain in some cases.

It’s best to start with low-impact exercises such as walking or yoga and gradually increase intensity as your body adapts. As always, consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new exercise routine.

Spinal stability is achieved by “stiffening” the muscles around the low back and abdomen AND teaching your body to move in a spine-sparing way (spine-sparing means that the hips do most of the movement rather than the spine).

A Wellness Lifestyle

True wellness iExercises during lockdown have been key to coping without my regular chiropractic adjustments. As a chiropractor in Eastbourne I am used to being active with my job so changes in activity have affected my body. This is only going to be achieved through effort and lifestyle change, not the latest fad.

If you have suffered from a shoulder injury then these exercises may be for you. This blog will help those of you who have had a shoulder injury to gently strengthen the shoulder musculature and therefore work to stabilise the shoulder joint itself. Simple home-strengthening exercises for the shoulder can be done daily, however, make sure you check with your chiropractor at Lushington clinic in Eastbourne first.

Good Posture

Good posture doesn’t just look good, it’s essential for maintaining a healthy upper back and neck, and therefore helping to prevent or ease headaches caused by muscle tension. This may be a particular issue for people who spend long periods of time seated or looking at screens, such as office or remote workers.

This unnatural posture can lead to a variety of issues, including eye strain and headaches.

Have you been told you’ve got hunched posture? Are you worried your mobile phone’s contributing to the problem?
Think about it: when using our mobile we tend to drop our heads forward, rounding our shoulders resulting in a hunched posture.

With most people these days either sitting at a desk or driving for hours on end, sitting posture has never been more important.
According to a survey in 2010 Britons average over 14 hours sitting every day. This will be a combination of at work, in the car, on the sofa etc.

Ergonomic Furniture

Ergonomic furniture can play a role in preventing and managing headaches by promoting good posture, reducing eye strain, providing adjustable support and improving circulation.

Whilst ergonomic furniture can be helpful, it isn’t a magic fix. Firstly, it’s important to know that the term ergonomic isn’t protected in any way. Anyone can use it for any product. Secondly, simply having the right furniture won’t fix you. What’s more important is how you sit, stand, lie and move. It’s possible to use ergonomic furniture badly, putting strain on your muscles and joints.

We’d always advise you first fix your posture and movement habits before buying expensive ergonomic furniture.

How many hours do you spend sitting at a desk? If it’s anything like most of us, then the answer would be ‘a lot’!

In my previous jobs, before retraining as a chiropractor, I spent between 7 and 9 hours per day sitting down in front of a PC. That’s a HUGE proportion of the day. A bad desk setup or chair can have a big impact on how you feel and how your spine works simply because of the time spent in that position.

Getting Enough Rest

Good rest and sleep are essential for managing headaches. Adequate rest allows the body and mind to relax, reducing stress levels and promoting healing.

Sleep is particularly important for headache and migraine management because poor-quality sleep can exacerbate headache symptoms such as fatigue, irritability and difficulty concentrating. Getting enough sleep can also help regulate hormone levels and reduce inflammation, which can contribute to headaches.

Additionally, taking breaks from visually demanding activities and resting the eyes can help reduce eye strain, a common trigger for headaches.
If you experience frequent or severe headaches, consult with a healthcare professional to determine the underlying cause and develop an appropriate treatment plan that includes adequate rest and sleep.

Here are some links to blogs we’ve written on restful sleep:

A question I often ask my guests (patients), who come to see me at the chiropractic clinic in Eastbourne, is “what position do you sleep in?”. Similarly, a question I often get asked in return is “what is the best sleeping position for my back and neck?”

https://chirocare.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/image-24.jpg

Here at Lushington Chiropractic I often get asked by my guests how they can increase the speed of their recovery, feel more energetic and be healthier.  Well there’s no magic answer to that, but one of the things that I recommend helps is to make sure you’re getting good quality sleep.

https://chirocare.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/image-25.jpg

Sleep is an essential process that we all should be doing plenty of each night. This time is crucial for growing, healing and repair. An average amount of sleep of six hours or less has been shown to increase our risk of developing illness.

Healthy Diet

Maintaining a healthy diet can play a significant role in preventing and managing headaches. Certain foods and drinks, such as caffeine, alcohol and processed foods can trigger headaches, while other foods, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains can help reduce inflammation and promote overall health.

Adequate hydration is also essential for headache management, as dehydration can contribute to headaches. Drinking enough water and avoiding sugary drinks can help prevent headaches caused by dehydration.
Additionally, some specific foods and nutrients have been linked to headache or migraine prevention, such as magnesium, riboflavin (vitamin B2) and omega-3 fatty acids. Including foods such as nuts, seeds, leafy greens and fatty fish in your diet can help ensure adequate intake of these nutrients.

If you experience frequent or severe headaches, consider consulting with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian to develop a personalised nutrition plan that can help alleviate your symptoms.

Managing Stress and Mental Health

Suffering from headaches or migraines can be a debilitating experience that affects every aspect of your daily life. There’s a well-known link between headaches and stress, so it is important to try to address any causes of stress in your life and take care of your mental health as much as your physical health.

Stress and mental health can cause muscle tension and inflammation, which exacerbates and even causes headaches. In addition, when we’re depressed and fed up, our pain threshold lowers and we then feel aches and pains more acutely.

By managing stress through techniques like breathing exercises, meditation and yoga, you can help yourself to feel better. Managing your stress and mental health, sleep routines, having a healthier diet and exercising will help you feel better in lots of ways.

So don’t ignore the power of stress management when seeking relief from back pain – take control of your stress levels and improve your quality of life.

Common Misconceptions about Headaches

There are many misconceptions about pain, and headaches are no exception. The following are some of the common misconceptions about headaches and migraines:

Headaches are Only Caused by Physical Factors

While physical factors such as tension or illness can trigger headaches, psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, or depression can also play a role.

Headaches are Always Accompanied by Pain

While pain is the most common symptom of a headache, not all headaches are painful. Some people may experience headaches with symptoms such as dizziness, nausea or sensitivity to light or sound.

You Should Avoid Exercise if You Have a Headache

While intense exercise may worsen a headache, moderate exercise can actually help reduce the frequency and severity of headaches.

Headaches Only Affect Adults

Headaches can affect people of all ages, including children. In fact, some children experience frequent headaches due to allergies, dehydration or stress.

Headaches are a Normal Part of Life

While headaches are common, they are not a normal part of life. If you experience frequent headaches, it may be a sign of an underlying health condition that needs to be addressed.

Taking Painkillers Will Cure My Headaches

Painkillers can provide relief for some types of headaches, but they may not be effective for all types. Additionally, taking too many painkillers can lead to rebound headaches.

Headaches and Migraines are the Same

Migraines are a specific type of headache with distinct symptoms such as nausea, sensitivity to light and severe pain on one or both sides of the head. However, not all headaches are migraines. There are other types of headaches such as tension headaches, cluster headaches, and sinus headaches.

There’s No Cure for Headaches

While there is no one-size-fits-all cure for headaches, there are many treatment options available that can help manage and reduce headache symptoms. These include lifestyle changes, medication, chiropractic treatment and alternative therapies such as acupuncture or massage.
