What Is Shoulder Pain?

Shoulder pain can be miserable. In the UK, shoulder pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints and a leading cause of disability. Here are some UK statistics on shoulder pain and their causes.

According to the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), shoulder pain is estimated to be the third most common musculoskeletal complaint in the UK, after back and neck pain.

Any pain that holds you back is frustrating. Shoulder pain can be particularly frustrating. It can become a long-standing niggle that’s sore anytime you use your arm, or in some people it can result in severe pain and stop you from using it and ultimately prevent you from living life to the full.

The good news is that chiropractic can help. We’ve helped lots of people like you with shoulder pain.

Chiropractic Treatment for Shoulder Pain FAQs

What to Expect When you See a Chiropractor for Shoulder Pain

The General Chiropractic Council explain that chiropractors are trained to use a range of techniques when treating their patients.

Chiropractors are best known for using manual methods of care, including spinal and joint manipulation (also referred to as ‘adjustments’) but may also use other hands-on or instrument-assisted approaches.

At our chiropractic clinic in Eastbourne, you’ll find that our chiropractors may share lifestyle tips, dietary or nutritional advice, exercises and strategies to manage stress and discomfort to help you manage your injury.

Before starting treatment, your chiropractor will assess your symptoms to determine if chiropractic treatment is right for you. They’ll assess your injury to determine what techniques are likely to help and whether there are any alternative or medical options that would suit you.

Chiropractors are trained to recognise when chiropractic treatment will not help a medical condition and will make a referral to your GP or another healthcare professional, if necessary.

Some people want treatment on their first visit. We can’t guarantee that, because we need to asses you first! However, if you want treatment on your first visit then mention it to your chiropractor at the start of the visit and they’ll do everything they can to help.

Does Chiropractic Treatment for Shoulder Pain Hurt?

Your chiropractic treatment will be tailored to your specific needs and preferences. Some of the people who see us don’t like the pops and clicks, whereas others prefer a more physical approach.

Chiropractic treatment should always be within your personal comfort levels.

What Causes the Cracks with Chiropractic Treatment for Shoulder Pain?

Chiropractic treatment is famous for pops and clicks.

However, they’re not essential. Everything we do is centred around your needs and preferences. If you’re worried about the noises then rest assured, there are lots (and lots) of no-clicky techniques that will help (as well as muscle work, exercises and advice).

WARNING PHYSICS HERE: These noises happened when little air bubbles (nitrogen gas) form in the joints. The bubbles form due to the joint freeing off, which creates more space. The joint fluid (liquid) needs to expand (forming a gas) to fill the space. This creates a “pop”.

The loudness of your pops and cracks are not necessarily that relevant.

Did you know: Some of the chiropractors on YouTube have been known to add extra “pops” and “cracks” to their videos in post-production, as treatments aren’t always that noisy.

How Long Does It Take to Get Better from Shoulder Pain?

Chiropractors are well known for treating shoulder pain.

The question on your mind, though, is likely, "How long will it take for me to feel better?" The answer is, it varies.

Each person's body responds differently to treatment. The severity of the pain and the underlying condition will affect how fast you get better. However, many patients begin to feel improvement after just a few sessions. Long-lasting changes tend to take longer, weeks or months.

At Lushington Chiropractic we’ll discuss your prognosis and treatment plan with you. Your chiropractor will tailor your treatment to fit with your goals.

Even if you just want a short burst of care to help you out of a crisis that’s fine. Just let your chiropractor know so they can tailor your treatment plan to suit you.

Do You Have Acute or Chronic Shoulder Pain?

Acute shoulder pain is shoulder pain that has been present for less than six weeks. If the shoulder pain has been present for longer than six weeks, we would classify it as chronic shoulder pain.

Chronic shoulder pain can remain for many weeks, months or even years.

However, the good news is that there are several ways to help alleviate your pain and get you feeling your best again.

Acupuncture for Shoulder Pain in Eastbourne

Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment that can help your shoulder pain and rotator cuff injury.

By using needles to stimulate specific points on the body, acupuncture can help release tension and increase blood flow. This can help relieve shoulder pain and rotator cuff problems by easing tension in the surrounding muscles.

With regular sessions, you may feel a significant improvement in your pain, allowing you to get back to the things you love.

It’s understandable to be nervous if you’ve not tried acupuncture before. The needles are so tiny you may not even feel them go in.

Self-Help Tips for Shoulder Pain

The British Medical Journal carried out a study in 2017 which estimated that shoulder pain is the third most common musculoskeletal complaint in the UK, after back and neck pain. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways that we can help ourselves avoid or minimise pain, by making some changes or adjustments to how we lead our everyday lives. The following are some of the main ways in which we can help ourselves to manage our own pain:

Exercise for Shoulder Pain

Exercise can be an effective treatment for many types of shoulder pain. When performed correctly, exercise can help to strengthen the muscles and tendons surrounding the shoulder joint, improve flexibility and range of motion and reduce pain and inflammation.

Here are some ways that exercise can help with shoulder pain:

Strengthening Exercises

Strengthening exercises can help to improve the strength and stability of the muscles and tendons around the shoulder. Stronger muscles can better support the shoulder joint, reducing the risk of injury and improving overall function.

Stretching Exercises

Stretching exercises can help to improve flexibility and range of motion in the shoulder joint. Improved range of motion can help to reduce pain and stiffness and improve overall function.

Posture Exercises

Posture exercises can help to correct poor posture habits that can contribute to shoulder pain. Poor posture can put unnecessary stress on the shoulder joint, leading to pain and discomfort.

Cardiovascular Exercises

Cardiovascular exercises, such as walking or swimming, can help to improve overall health and cardiovascular function. This can help to reduce inflammation and promote healing throughout the body, including the shoulder joint.

It’s important to work with a qualified healthcare provider or physical therapist when starting an exercise program for shoulder pain. They can help to create a customised exercise program that is safe and effective for your specific condition and level of fitness. They can also teach proper posture and technique to prevent further injury and ensure the best possible outcomes.

If you have suffered from a shoulder injury then these exercises may be for you. This blog will help those of you who have had a shoulder injury to gently strengthen the shoulder musculature and therefore work to stabilise the shoulder joint itself. Simple home-strengthening exercises for the shoulder can be done daily, however, make sure you check with your chiropractor at Lushington clinic in Eastbourne first.

Exercises during lockdown have been key to coping without my regular chiropractic adjustments. As a chiropractor in Eastbourne I am used to being active with my job so changes in activity have affected my body. I am now missing my adjustments and also sitting more and adopting some odd postures too. The exercises I have found most useful target posture and glute activation.

Good Posture

Good posture can help to reduce or prevent shoulder pain by promoting proper alignment of the shoulder joint and reducing unnecessary stress on the muscles and tendons surrounding the joint.

When you have good posture, your spine is in a neutral position which helps to distribute weight evenly throughout the body. This allows the muscles around the shoulder joint to work more efficiently and reduces the risk of overuse injuries.

Here are some ways that good posture can help with shoulder pain:

Promotes Proper Alignment

Good posture helps to align the shoulder joint properly, reducing the risk of injury and improving overall function.

Reduces Muscle Tension

Poor posture can cause muscle tension in the neck, back and shoulders which can contribute to shoulder pain. Good posture helps to reduce tension and allows the muscles to work more efficiently.

Improves Range of Motion

By aligning the shoulder joint properly, good posture can improve range of motion and reduce stiffness and pain in the shoulder.

Prevents Overuse Injuries

Good posture helps to distribute weight evenly throughout the body, reducing the risk of overuse injuries that can lead to shoulder pain.

It’s important to be mindful of your posture throughout the day, especially if you spend a lot of time sitting at a desk or using a computer. Make sure that your chair is adjusted properly, and take frequent breaks to stretch and move around. If you are experiencing persistent shoulder pain, it’s important to seek medical attention from a qualified healthcare provider. They can help to determine the underlying cause of your pain and recommend appropriate treatment options, including exercise and posture correction.

Posture is a hot topic at the moment. I’m seeing a lot of people from across Eastbourne who’ve been working from home more now since Covid, who want to improve their posture. If you’re struggling with poor posture can make you unbalanced and cause a number of problems up and down the body.

Have you been told you’ve got hunched posture? Are you worried your mobile phone’s contributing to the problem?

Think about it: when using our mobile we tend to drop our heads forward, rounding our shoulders resulting in a hunched posture.

Heat or Ice for Shoulder Pain?

If you’re dealing with shoulder pain, applying heat or ice can make a world of difference. While both options can feel nice, we generally recommend ice.

Ice is not only numbs the area but reduces circulation and calms swelling and inflammation, which is an important issue for tennis elbow pain.

ADVICE

Lushington Chiropractic Ice Advice

Wrap an ice pack up in a towel. You shouldn’t put it directly on the skin. Put it on the painful area for 5-10 minutes, or take it off sooner if it’s too cold i.e. “painfully cold”.

Do this 4 to 6 times a day depending on how bad your shoulder pain is.

Heat can feel nice and soothing. However, it increses blood flow which can increase your shoudler ache after you’ve taken the heat away.

If in doubt use ice.

Lushington Chiropractic Heat Advice

Gently warm a hot pack in the microwave. It shouldn’t be hot, just a soothing warmth easing the painful area.

Whatever you choose, just remember not to apply either option for too long.

Leaving ice or heat on too long can cause further damage, so give us a call if you’re unsure.

Ergonomic Furniture

Ergonomic furniture is designed to support your body’s natural alignment, ergonomic chairs and desks keep your spine in a neutral position, reducing the risk of injury and pain. It helps you look after your posture when you’re working or relaxing.

Whilst ergonomic furniture can be helpful it isn’t a magic fix. Firstly, it’s important to know that the term ergonomic isn’t protected in anyway. Anyone can use it for any product. Secondly, simply having the right furniture won’t fix you. What’s more important is how you sit, stand, lie and move. It’s possible to use ergonomic furniture badly, putting strain on your muscles and joints.

We’d always advise you first fix your posture and movement habits before buying expensive ergonomic furniture.

How many hours do you spend sitting at a desk? If it’s anything like most of us, then the answer would be ‘a lot’!

In my previous jobs, before retraining as a chiropractor, I spent between 7 and 9 hours per day sitting down in front of a PC. That’s a HUGE proportion of the day. A bad desk setup or chair can have a big impact on how you feel and how your spine works simply because of the time spent in that position.

My name is Emma and I’m a chiropractor working in Eastbourne. We all know that since March 2020 the world turned upside down, and many of us are getting used to a new ‘normal’ way of life.

As a chiropractor in Eastbourne, this means getting used to new PPE procedures, but for a large population of Eastbourne it also means adapting to …

Getting Enough Rest

It’s no secret that shoulder pain can be a real bother, but did you know that a good night’s rest could be the key to relieving your discomfort? Restful sleep is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle, and it can play a big role in managing all types of pain.

When you sleep soundly, your body is given the opportunity to repair and regenerate, which can have a real impact on the inflammation and stiffness associated with shoulder problems. So, whether you’re dealing with an acute injury or a long-term condition, prioritising your sleep habits are important. With a little dedication and some healthy practices, you might just find that you wake up feeling better than ever before.

Here are some links to blogs we’ve written on sleep and mattresses:

https://chirocare.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/image-23.jpg

A question I often ask my guests (patients), who come to see me at the chiropractic clinic in Eastbourne, is “what position do you sleep in?”. Similarly, a question I often get asked in return is “what is the best sleeping position for my back and neck?”

https://chirocare.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/image-46.jpg

Sleep is an essential process that we all should be doing plenty of each night. This time is crucial for growing, healing and repair. An average amount of sleep of six hours or less has been shown to increase our risk of developing illness.

Healthy Diet

To some extent a healthy diet can help with some types of pain. A balanced diet rich in nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, and vitamins D and K can promote bone and joint health.

Additionally, anti-inflammatory foods, such as omega-3 fatty acids found in fish or flaxseed, can decrease inflammation in the body and reduce pain levels. A diet high in fruits and vegetables, which are rich in antioxidants, can also promote overall wellbeing by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.

Coupling a healthy diet with exercise can further strengthen and support your body. Making small, sustainable changes to your eating habits can have a significant impact on your shoulder pain and overall health, so make sure to prioritize a balanced diet.

Chiropractors are trained to have a detailed understanding of how the body functions and what we can do to look after ourselves. Water is well known for its revitalising properties, yet even though it is essential to health, the benefits of drinking water are often overlooked.

I love Salmon, and given how good it is for you, so should you. Not only does it taste great but it can also provide some great health benefits.

So how much do you know about salmon?  Most of us know its a fish with a pinky/orange type colour, but what beyond this?  Below I have given some of the reasons I love salmon.

I often see my chiropractic patients when I’m out and about around Eastbourne. Today I was asked whether eggs are good for us or not.

In the news they seem to swap from being super healthy to causing heart disease in an instant, so hopefully this blog can help clear up any confusion.

Managing Stress and Mental Health

Suffering from shoulder pain can be a debilitating experience that affects every aspect of your daily life. There’s a well-known link between chronic (long-term) pain, mental health and depression. So, as well as the various treatments for your shoulder pain, it’s also worth doing what you can to manage your mental health as well.

Stress and mental health can cause muscle tension and inflammation, which exacerbates pain. When we’re depressed and fed up, our pain threshold lowers and we feel more sensitive to aches and pains.
By managing stress through techniques like breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga you can help yourself feel better. Managing your stress and mental health, sleep routines, having a healthier diet and exercising will help you feel better in lots of ways.

So don’t ignore the power of stress management when seeking relief from shoulder pain, take control of your stress levels and improve your quality of life.

Common Misconceptions About Shoulder Pain

There are many common misconceptions about shoulder pain, which can lead to confusion and delay in diagnosis and treatment. Here are some of the most common misconceptions:

Rest is Best for Shoulder Pain

While rest may be helpful for some types of shoulder pain such as overuse injuries, it is not always the best treatment. In fact, for some conditions such as frozen shoulder, gentle exercise and physical therapy may be more effective.

Shoulder Pain Only Affects Sports People

While athletes are at an increased risk for shoulder injuries due to the demands of their sport, shoulder pain can affect anyone, regardless of their level of physical activity.

I’m Going to Need Surgery for my Shoulder Pain

While shoulder pain can be a sign of a serious injury such as a rotator cuff rupture, it can also be caused by less severe conditions. While surgery may be required for some types of shoulder injuries, it is not always necessary. Many cases of shoulder pain can be treated with conservative measures such as rest, physical therapy and medication.

Only Shoulder Problems Cause Shoulder Pain

While shoulder pain is often caused by problems with the shoulder joint, it can also be caused by issues with the neck, spine or nerves. It’s important to understand the true causes and treatments for shoulder pain to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. If you are experiencing persistent or severe shoulder pain, it’s important to seek medical attention from a qualified healthcare provider.

Anatomy of the Shoulder

The shoulder is a complex joint that allows for a wide range of movement. It is made up of several bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Here is a breakdown of the anatomy of the shoulder:

Bones

The humerus, or upper arm bone

The clavicle, or collarbone

The scapula, or shoulder blade

Joints

The glenohumeral joint, which is where the head of the humerus meets the scapula. This is the main joint of the shoulder and allows for a wide range of movement.

The acromioclavicular joint, which is where the clavicle meets the scapula.

Muscles

The rotator cuff muscles, which are a group of four muscles that attach the humerus to the scapula and help with shoulder stability and rotation. The deltoid muscle, which covers the shoulder joint and helps with lifting and abduction. The pectoralis major muscle, which connects the sternum and clavicle to the humerus and helps with arm movement.

Tendons and Ligaments

The rotator cuff tendons, which connect the rotator cuff muscles to the humerus and help stabilise the shoulder joint.

The biceps tendon, which attaches the biceps muscle to the humerus and helps with lifting and rotation.

The labrum, which is a ring of cartilage that surrounds the glenoid cavity of the scapula and helps keep the humerus in place.

Nerves

The brachial plexus, which is a network of nerves that provides sensation and movement to the shoulder, arm, and hand.

Blood Vessels

The subclavian artery, which supplies blood to the shoulder and arm.
