What Is Hip Pain?

If you’ve ever experienced hip pain, you understand the uncomfortable and sometimes debilitating effects it can have on your daily life. Hip pain is a common condition that can occur in the joint, lower back, muscles or nerves surrounding the hip area.

Hip pain can be caused by a variety of factors such as injury, arthritis, overuse or even poor posture.

According to a study published in the British Medical Journal, hip pain affects approximately 14% of adults in the United Kingdom, and it is more common among women than men, with women being twice as likely to report hip pain. The risk of developing hip pain increases with age, especially once you’re over 50. The reason for this is that osteoarthritis is the most common cause of hip pain in the UK, affecting approximately 8.5 million people.

Although hip pain is common, it doesn’t have to control your life.

Chiropractic can help. We’ve helped lots of people like you with hip pain.

Chiropractic Treatment for Hip Pain FAQs

What to Expect When you See a Chiropractor for Hip Pain

The General Chiropractic Council explain that chiropractors are trained to use a range of techniques when treating their patients.

Chiropractors are best known for using manual methods of care, including spinal and joint manipulation (also referred to as ‘adjustment’) but may also use other hands-on or instrument-assisted approaches.

At our chiropractic clinic in Eastbourne, you’ll find that our chiropractors may share lifestyle tips, dietary or nutritional advice, exercises and strategies to manage stress and discomfort to help you manage your sports injury.

Before starting treatment, your chiropractor will assess your symptoms to determine if chiropractic treatment is right for you. They’ll assess your sports injury and what techniques are likely to help and whether there are any alternative or medical options that would suit you.

Chiropractors are trained to recognise when chiropractic treatment will not help a medical condition and will make a referral to your General Practitioner or another healthcare professional, if necessary.

Some people want treatment on their first visit. We can’t guarantee that, because we need to asses you first! However, if you want treatment on your first visit then mention it to your chiropractor at the start of the visit and they’ll do everything they can to help.

Does Chiropractic Treatment for Hip Pain Hurt?

Your chiropractic treatment will be tailored to your specific needs and preferences. Some of the people who see us don’t like the pops and clicks, whereas others prefer a more physical approach.

Chiropractic treatment should always be within your personal comfort levels.

What Causes the Cracks with Chiropractic Treatment for Hip Pain?

Chiropractic treatment is famous for pops and clicks.

However, they’re not essential. Everything we do is centred around your needs and preferences. If you’re worried about the noises then rest assured, there are lots (and lots) of no-clicky techniques that will help (as well as muscle work, exercises and advice).

WARNING PHYSICS HERE: These noises happened when little air bubbles (nitrogen gas) form in the joints. The bubbles form due to the joint freeing off, which creates more space. The joint fluid (liquid) needs to expand (forming a gas) to fill the space. This creates a “pop”.

The loudness of your pops and cracks are not necessarily that relevant.

Did you know: Some of the You Tuber chiropractors have been known to add extra “pops” and “cracks” to their videos in post-production, as treatments aren’t always that noisy.

How Long Does It Take to Get Better from Hip Pain?

Chiropractors are well known for treating hip pain.

The question on your mind, though, is likely, "How long will it take for me to feel better?" The answer is, it varies.

Each person's body responds differently to treatment. The severity of the pain and the underlying condition will affect how fast you get better. However, many patients begin to feel improvement after just a few sessions. Long-lasting changes tend to take longer, weeks or months.

At Lushington Chiropractic we’ll discuss your prognosis and treatment plan with you. Your chiropractor will tailor your treatment to fit with your goals.

Even if you just want a short burst of care to help you out of a crisis that’s fine. Just let your chiropractor know so they can tailor your treatment plan to suit you.

Have You Got Acute Hip Pain or Chronic Hip Pain?

Acute hip pain is hip pain that has been there for less than six weeks. Whereas chronic hip pain is hip pain that's continued for longer than six weeks. Chronic hip pain can go on for months or even years.

However, the good news is that there are several ways to help alleviate your pain and get you feeling your best again.

Do You Have Acute or Chronic Hip Pain?

Acute hip pain is pain that has been present for less than around 6 weeks. Chronic hip pain is pain that has continued beyond the initial 6 week period. Chronic hip pain may be present for many weeks, months, or even years.

However, the good news is that there are several ways to help alleviate your pain and get you feeling your best again.

Self-Help Tips for Hip Pain

Hip pain affects millions of people worldwide and can be caused by a variety of factors such as poor posture, strain, injury, or underlying medical conditions. Suffering from hip pain can be debilitating. Chronic (long-term) hip pain can affect many aspects of life from participation in hobbies, to simply walking and moving around and getting a good night’s sleep.

Thankfully, there are plenty of ways that we can help ourselves avoid or minimise pain. The following are some of the main ways in which we can help ourselves to manage our own pain:

Exercise for Hip Pain

Are you experiencing discomfort or pain in your hips? It’s important not to ignore the issue and instead, take proactive steps to alleviate the pain. One effective solution is exercise.
Engaging in physical activity can help to strengthen the muscles surrounding the hip joint, increasing their flexibility, and reducing the pressure on the joint itself.

Don’t worry if you’re not a fitness fanatic – there are gentle, low-impact exercises that can provide relief, such as swimming and yoga. By incorporating these exercises into your routine, you can manage hip pain and prevent future issues from arising.

So don’t suffer in silence – start moving and get back to living your best, pain-free life.

Regular exercise and stretching can help strengthen the muscles around your joints and improve flexibility. Additionally, regular exercise helps maintain your healthy weight and the endorphins keep us happy which reduces the risk of joint pain. With consistent exercise and proper guidance, joint pain can be relieved or reduced, leading to a more optimistic outlook on life.

Good Posture

By maintaining proper posture, whether sitting or standing, we can reduce the pressure on hip joints, relieve tension in surrounding muscles, and potentially prevent further damage.

It’s important to note that good posture isn’t just a habit, it’s a lifestyle change. With some practice and patience, you can take control of your pain and improve your overall quality of life. So don’t sit with your legs tucked underneath you, or curled up on the sofa. Don’t stand resting on one leg and avoid crossing your legs for long periods when sitting.

Ergonomic Furniture

If you suffer from hip pain, you know how difficult it can be to stay comfortable during the workday. That’s where ergonomic furniture comes in.

Make sure your chair is supportive and you sit back in it properly to support your low back. Not only will you feel less pain, but you’ll also be able to focus on your work without constant distractions.

Investing in a comfortable chair with the right support will help reduce the pressure on your hips. Look for chairs with adjustable height, backrest, and armrests to ensure your body is in the correct position while working. Additionally, a standing desk can provide relief and encourage movement throughout the day.

Getting Enough Rest

If you’re one of the many people who suffer from hip pain, you know how frustrating it can be to try to get a good night’s sleep. Unfortunately, not getting enough rest can actually make your pain worse. That’s why it’s so important to make sure you’re giving your body the potential to heal as much as possible while you sleep.

There are a few things you can do to help support more restful sleep when you’re dealing with hip pain. First, try using a firm mattress that provides plenty of support to your hips and spine. You might also find it helpful to try using a pillow between your knees while you sleep to reduce pressure on your hips. Lastly, and most importantly, make sure you’re getting enough rest each night.

Restful sleep is essential for your body to heal and recover, so do whatever you can to make sure you’re getting the sleep you need to feel your best.

Here are some links to blogs we’ve written on restful sleep:

A question I often ask my guests (patients), who come to see me at the chiropractic clinic in Eastbourne, is “what position do you sleep in?”. Similarly, a question I often get asked in return is “what is the best sleeping position for my back and neck?”

Here at Lushington Chiropractic I often get asked by my guests how they can increase the speed of their recovery, feel more energetic and be healthier.  Well there’s no magic answer to that, but one of the things that I recommend helps is to make sure you’re getting good quality sleep.

Sleep is an essential process that we all should be doing plenty of each night. This time is crucial for growing, healing and repair. An average amount of sleep of six hours or less has been shown to increase our risk of developing illness.

Healthy Diet

If you suffer from hip pain, you know how debilitating it can be.
Whether it’s from arthritis, injury, or overuse, the pain can interfere with daily activities and reduce your quality of life. While medication and physical therapy can help manage the pain, one often overlooked solution is a healthy diet.

By including foods that reduce inflammation and support joint health, you could see a significant reduction in hip pain. Foods like fatty fish, leafy greens and nuts contain omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants that can decrease inflammation in the body.

Additionally, fruits and vegetables provide important nutrients for joint health, such as vitamin C and beta-carotene. By making small changes to your diet, you can take control of your hip pain and improve your overall health.

Here are some links to blogs we’ve written on nutrition:

I love Salmon, and given how good it is for you, so should you. Not only does it taste great but it can also provide some great health benefits.

So how much do you know about salmon?  Most of us know its a fish with a pinky/orange type colour, but what beyond this?  Below I have given some of the reasons I love salmon.

https://chirocare.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/image-29.jpg

If this is the case then surely we should make it the most nutritious and beneficial?

Breakfast nutrition has been argued about for years. Due to our busy lives we are now spending less time making nutritious meals. Instead, we choose to opt for convenience foods that don’t fuel us properly, and can even cause drops in energy or mood through the course of the day.

Managing Stress and Mental Health

Suffering from joint pain can be a debilitating experience that affects every aspect of your daily life. There’s a well-known link between chronic (long-term) pain, mental health and depression. So, as well as the various treatments for your joint pain, it’s also worth doing what you can to manage your mental health as well.

Stress and mental health can cause muscle tension and inflammation, which exacerbates joint pain. When we’re depressed and fed up, our pain threshold lowers and we feel more sensitive to the  aches and pains we are experiencing.

By managing stress through techniques like breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga you can help yourself feel better. Managing your stress and mental health, sleep routines, having a healthier diet and exercising will help you feel better in lots of ways. So don’t ignore the power of stress management when seeking relief from joint pain, take control of your stress levels and improve your quality of life.

Here is a blog we’ve written about stress:

The team at Lushington Chiropractic in Eastbourne share their tips on how to reduce and manage stress.

The spine and posture are important factors in the ability of the body to cope with stress. In fact, a healthy spine and nervous system can help to manage stress more effectively.

Common Misconceptions about Hip Pain

Here are five common misconceptions about hip pain:

Hip Pain is Just for Old People

While hip pain is more common in older adults, it can affect people of all ages.
Different types of hip pain are more likely to affect different demographics. Eastbourne has a larger older population and we see plenty of patients with hip osteoarthritis. We’re delighted to help them alongside other core treatments for osteoarthritis. Although it’s rare we see children with hip pain we do see younger people with hip pain, which is being caused by muscular aches or referral from their back.

Women of all ages, but especially during pregnancy can suffer with pelvic joint pain. This can refer around the hip and they may see us for what they initially think is a hip pain or sciatica.

Rest is the Best Treatment for Hip Pain:

Bed rest is rarely helpful and often makes the problem worse. In some cases, we advise active rest, where we limit certain activities. Because such different problems can cause hip pain the self-help advice will vary depending on that that person needs.

Staying active and doing your home exercises are often useful to speed recovery from muscle and joint problems – not bedrest!

Hip Pain Always Requires Surgery

Surgery is rarely needed for most types of hip pain. Even with osteoarthritis surgery is the last resort. However, if needed there are a range of surgical options depending on what’s causing your hip pain.

My Hip Pain Means I Need a Hip Replacement

Many types of hip pain can be treated with non-surgical methods. However, hip replacement can be a very effective operation for advanced osteoarthritic hip pain. The results are often excellent for those people who need it.

Hip Pain Will Go Away on Its Own

There are plenty of types of muscle and joint pain, which are self-limiting (that means they get better on their own). That’s why our chiropractors always start with an initial consultation. It’s best to know up front what’s causing your hip pain before deciding on the best treatment and self-help options.

Anatomy of the Hip

The hip joint is a ball-and-socket joint that connects the pelvis to the thigh bone (femur) and allows for a wide range of motion in the leg. The anatomy of the hip can be divided into the following structures:

Bones

The hip joint is made up of two main bones – the pelvis and the femur. The femur has a rounded head that fits into the socket of the pelvis, forming the ball-and-socket joint.

Cartilage

The surfaces of the bones that make up the hip joint are covered with a smooth layer of cartilage, which helps to cushion the joint and reduce friction during movement.

Ligaments

The hip joint is held in place by a network of ligaments, which connect the bones and provide stability to the joint. The main ligaments of the hip include the iliofemoral ligament, the pubofemoral ligament, and the ischiofemoral ligament.

Muscles

Several muscles surround the hip joint and are responsible for moving the leg. These include the gluteus maximus, the hip flexors (iliopsoas), the adductors (inner thigh muscles), and the abductors (outer hip muscles).

Bursae

Small fluid-filled sacs called bursae are located near the hip joint and help to reduce friction between tissues during movement.

Nerves

Several important nerves run through the hip region, including the femoral nerve, the sciatic nerve, and the obturator nerve. These nerves are responsible for providing sensation and controlling movement in the leg.
