What Is Muscle Spasm?

Muscle spasms, also known as muscle cramps, are a common occurrence and can happen to anyone at any age. They’re involuntary contractions of the muscles causing pain, discomfort and even temporary weakness (giving way). Muscle spasms are quite common and can occur in any muscle in the body. They can happen during exercise, while sleeping or even when sitting or standing for long periods of time.

Another type of muscle spasms are those that are due to overuse, dehydration and electrolyte imbalances in the body.

And finally, you can also get muscle spasms due to muscles contractions as a compensation for another pain, injury or weakness. These are the kind of muscle spasm that you get with bad posture or repetitive actions.

These compensatory muscle spasms tend to be persistent, lasting for a long time. These stiff, tight muscles can be annoying and restricting. They can also result in aches and tightness holding you back from enjoying life to the full.

The good news is that chiropractic can help.

We’ve helped lots of people with muscle spasms.

Your chiropractor in Eastbourne will uniquely tailor your treatment plan to suit you. They may use massage, home stretches, exercises and acupuncture alongside chiropractic adjustments and self-help tips.

Chiropractic Treatment for Muscle Spasm FAQs

What to Expect When you See a Chiropractor for Muscle Spasm

The General Chiropractic Council explain that chiropractors are trained to use a range of techniques when treating their patients.

Chiropractors are best known for using manual methods of care, including spinal and joint manipulation (also referred to as ‘adjustment’) but may also use other hands-on or instrument-assisted approaches.

At our chiropractic clinic in Eastbourne, you’ll find that our chiropractors may share lifestyle tips, dietary or nutritional advice, exercises and strategies to manage stress and discomfort to help you manage your sports injury.

Before starting treatment, your chiropractor will assess your symptoms to determine if chiropractic treatment is right for you. They’ll assess your sports injury and what techniques are likely to help and whether there are any alternative or medical options that would suit you.

Chiropractors are trained to recognise when chiropractic treatment will not help a medical condition and will make a referral to your General Practitioner or another healthcare professional, if necessary.

Some people want treatment on their first visit. We can’t guarantee that, because we need to asses you first! However, if you want treatment on your first visit then mention it to your chiropractor at the start of the visit and they’ll do everything they can to help.

Does Chiropractic Treatment for Muscle Spasm Hurt?

Your chiropractic treatment will be tailored to your specific needs and preferences. Some of the people who see us don’t like the pops and clicks, whereas others prefer a more physical approach.

Chiropractic treatment should always be within your personal comfort levels.

What Causes the Cracks with Chiropractic Treatment for Muscle Spasm?

Chiropractic treatment is famous for pops and clicks.

However, they’re not essential. Everything we do is centred around your needs and preferences. If you’re worried about the noises then rest assured, there are lots (and lots) of no-clicky techniques that will help (as well as muscle work, exercises and advice).

WARNING PHYSICS HERE: These noises happened when little air bubbles (nitrogen gas) form in the joints. The bubbles form due to the joint freeing off, which creates more space. The joint fluid (liquid) needs to expand (forming a gas) to fill the space. This creates a “pop”.

The loudness of your pops and cracks are not necessarily that relevant.

Did you know: Some of the You Tuber chiropractors have been known to add extra “pops” and “cracks” to their videos in post-production, as treatments aren’t always that noisy.

How Long Does It Take to Get Better from Muscle Spasm?

Chiropractors are well known for treating muscle spasm.

The question on your mind, though, is likely, "How long will it take for me to feel better?" The answer is, it varies.

Each person's body responds differently to treatment. The severity of the pain and the underlying condition will affect how fast you get better. However, many patients begin to feel improvement after just a few sessions. Long-lasting changes tend to take longer, weeks or months.

At Lushington Chiropractic we’ll discuss your prognosis and treatment plan with you. Your chiropractor will tailor your treatment to fit with your goals.

Even if you just want a short burst of care to help you out of a crisis that’s fine. Just let your chiropractor know so they can tailor your treatment plan to suit you.

Do You Have Acute Muscle Spasm or Chronic Muscle Spasm?

Acute muscle spasm is muscle spasm that has been present for less than around six weeks. Whereas chronic muscle spasm is spasm that has continued there for more than six weeks.

Chronic muscle spasm might be due to a bad posture, compensation for another problem or repetitive action.

However, the good news is that there are several ways to help alleviate your pain and get you feeling your best again.

Self-Help Tips for Muscle Spasm

Here are some self-help tips that may help relieve muscle spasms:

Stretching

Gentle stretching exercises can help alleviate muscle tension and prevent spasms.

Massage

A gentle massage can help increase blood flow to the affected area and relieve muscle tension.

Heat therapy

Applying a warm compress or taking a warm bath can help relax tense muscles and relieve spasms.

Cold therapy

Applying an ice pack or cold compress to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and relieve muscle spasms.

Hydration

Drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, can help prevent dehydration and reduce the risk of muscle spasms.

Proper nutrition

Eating a balanced diet with adequate amounts of calcium, potassium, and magnesium can help maintain proper electrolyte balance and prevent muscle spasms.

Rest

Resting the affected muscle and avoiding overuse can help relieve muscle spasms and prevent further injury.

It’s important to note that if your muscle spasms do not improve with self-help measures, or if they are severe or frequent, you should seek medical attention.

Exercise for Muscle Spasm

If you’re dealing with the discomfort of muscle spasms, it can be difficult to find relief. However, incorporating exercise into your routine may be just the solution you need.

Exercise has been shown to help ease muscle spasms by improving flexibility and strengthening muscles, reducing the risk of injury. Movement also stimulates blood flow, promoting healing and reducing inflammation. Yoga and other gentle stretching exercises can be particularly helpful for relaxing tense muscles, while low-impact activities like swimming or cycling can help strengthen and tone.

So, if you’re struggling with muscle spasm, don’t just sit and suffer in silence. Get moving and let the power of exercise work in your favour.

Here are some links to blogs we’ve written on self-help exercises:

Spinal stability is achieved by “stiffening” the muscles around the low back and abdomen AND teaching your body to move in a spine-sparing way (spine-sparing means that the hips do most of the movement rather than the spine).

Osteoarthritis of the knee is unfortunately a common problem. One thing that experts an agree on is that prevention is better than cure. My guests (patients) often ask me what the best knee pain exercises are to help them prevent, manage and rehab.

Good Posture

Correct posture plays a vital role in reducing muscle spasms and preventing them from recurring. By maintaining good posture, you greatly reduce the strain on your muscles, particularly in the back, neck, and shoulders.

When your muscles are under excess strain, they can become tight and painful, leading to spasms. Regularly exercising to strengthen your core muscles will also help to maintain proper posture.

It’s important to remember that maintaining the right posture can help to prevent a whole range of musculoskeletal issues, so take the steps necessary to improve your posture today and enjoy long-lasting benefits.

Here’s a blog we wrote about posture:

https://chirocare.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/image-56.jpg

Posture is a hot topic at the moment. I’m seeing a lot of people from across Eastbourne who’ve been working from home more now since Covid, who want to improve their posture. If you’re struggling with poor posture can make you unbalanced and cause a number of problems up and down the body.

Have you been told you’ve got hunched posture? Are you worried your mobile phone’s contributing to the problem?

Think about it: when using our mobile we tend to drop our heads forward, rounding our shoulders resulting in a hunched posture.

Heat or Ice for Muscle Spasm?

Muscle spasms can cause a great deal of discomfort, and knowing whether to use heat or ice can make a big difference in finding relief. While heat can help to relax tense muscles and increase blood flow, ice works to reduce inflammation and numb the area, providing a soothing sensation. So, when it comes to muscle spasms, it’s important to consider what caused the spasm and what symptoms you are experiencing.

For example, if there is acute inflammation or swelling, ice may be the better choice. However, if the muscle spasm is due to muscle tension or a lack of blood flow, heat may be the way to go. Ultimately, it’s best to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the best course of action for your particular situation.

ADVICE

Lushington Chiropractic Ice Advice

Wrap an ice pack up in a towel. You shouldn’t put it directly on the skin. Put it on the painful area for 5-10 minutes, or take it off sooner if it’s too cold i.e. “painfully cold”.

Do this 4 to 6 times a day depending on how bad the pain is.

On the other hand, muscle cramps and muscle spasms tend to respond better with heat. Heat eases the pain by improving blood flow, relaxing muscles and providing soothing relief.

Lushington Chiropractic Heat Advice

Gently warm a hot pack in the microwave. It shouldn’t be hot, just a soothing warmth easing the painful area.

Whatever you choose, just remember not to apply either option for too long.

By incorporating heat or ice into your pain management routine, you can take control of your symptoms and get back to living a pain-free life.

Ergonomic Furniture

Ergonomic furniture is designed to support your body’s natural alignment, ergonomic chairs and desks keep your spine in a neutral position, reducing the risk of injury and pain. It helps you look after your posture when you’re working or relaxing.

Whilst ergonomic furniture can be helpful it isn’t a magic fix. Firstly, it’s important to know that the term ergonomic isn’t protected in anyway. Anyone can use it for any product. Secondly, simply having the right furniture won’t fix you. What’s more important is how you sit, stands, lie and move. It’s possible to use ergonomic furniture badly, putting strain on your muscles and joints.

We’d always advise you first fix your posture and movement habits before buying expensive ergonomic furniture.

Investing in a comfortable chair with the right support will help reduce the pressure on your knees. Look for chairs with adjustable height, backrest, and armrests to ensure your body is in the correct position while working. Additionally, a standing desk can provide relief and encourage movement throughout the day.

Getting Enough Rest

It’s no secret that living with pain can be a real bother, but did you know that a good night’s rest could be the key to relieving your discomfort? Restful sleep is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle, and it can play a big role in managing pain.

When you sleep soundly, your body is given the opportunity to repair and regenerate, which can have a real impact on the inflammation and stiffness associated with back problems.

So, whether you’re dealing with an acute injury or a long-term condition, prioritising your sleep habits are important. With a little dedication and some healthy practices, you might just find that you wake up feeling better than ever before.

Healthy Diet

If you’re frequently experiencing muscle spasms, it may be time to take a closer look at your diet. Eating a healthy, nutrient-rich diet can do wonders for reducing the frequency and severity of muscle spasms. Be sure to include plenty of fruits and vegetables in your meals, as these foods are packed with vitamins and minerals that help keep your muscles functioning properly.

Foods that are high in protein, such as lean meats, fish, and tofu, are also essential for building and maintaining muscle. Additionally, make sure you stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. By making these dietary changes, you’ll be well on your way to reducing muscle spasms and improving your overall health and wellbeing.

Managing Stress and Mental Health

Suffering from pain can be a debilitating experience that affects every aspect of your daily life. There’s a well-known link between chronic (long-term) pain, mental health and depression.

So, as well as the various treatments for your muscle spasm, it’s also worth doing what you can to manage your mental health as well. Stress and mental health can cause muscle tension and inflammation, which exacerbates spasms. When we’re depressed and fed up, our pain threshold lowers and we feel more sensitive to aches and pains.

By managing stress through techniques like breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga you can help yourself feel better. Managing your stress and mental health, sleep routines, having a healthier diet and exercising will help you feel better in lots of ways. So don’t ignore the power of stress management when seeking relief from muscle spasm, take control of your stress levels and improve your quality of life.

Here is a blog we’ve written about stress:

The team at Lushington Chiropractic in Eastbourne share their tips on how to reduce and manage stress.

The spine and posture are important factors in the ability of the body to cope with stress. In fact, a healthy spine and nervous system can help to manage stress more effectively.

By taking proactive steps to manage your stress and knee pain, you can achieve greater well-being and quality of life.

Common Misconceptions about Muscle Spasm

There are several common misconceptions about muscle spasms, including:

Muscle Spasm, Joint Pain, Trapped Nerve, Slipped Disc

It’s not always helpful to pigeonhole your problems under a specific label. Your body parts work together and one problem often results in a range of compensations elsewhere.

For example, if you’ve got muscle spasms (for whatever reason) your body will compensate and adapt. There will be a range of secondary effects. Other muscles may tighten to compensate and the changes in muscle tone will affect the joints they attach to.

At Lushington we often see muscle spasms having a knock-on effect on the joints too, and visa-versa.
When considering what’s wrong with the body, we think it’s important to consider the functional story and how one problem can cause other aspects to compensate.

All You Have to do is Stretch to Relieve Muscle Spasm

While stretching can help relieve muscle spasms, it is not always effective and may even exacerbate the issue in some cases.

Muscle Spasms Mean You’re Dehydrated

While dehydration can contribute to the development of muscle spasms, it is not always the cause.

Muscle Spasms Only Occur in Athletes

Actually, muscle spasms can occur in anyone, regardless of their level of physical activity.

All Muscle Spasms are the Same

In reality, there are several different types of muscle spasms, each with their own causes and treatment options.

Muscle Spasms Only Affect the Legs

While leg cramps are a common type of muscle spasm, they can occur in any muscle group, including the back, neck, and arms.
