Barbara is a 54 year old part time gardener. For about 2 months now she has been experiencing pain on the outside of her elbow, especially when using certain tools at work. She didn’t think much of it when it first started happening but it is now quite painful and is happening much more regularly.
She spoke to a friend about it who recommended Sports massage. Barbara has never had sports massage before but was desperate to get it sorted.
The sports massage therapist asked Barbara some questions regarding the pain, and also did some movement tests to get a clearer picture of what’s going on.
The sports massage found that Barbara had the start of tennis elbow, a condition that causes pain and lack of movement around the outside of the elbow, usually due to repetitive strain. They explained that using tools such as sequiturs regularly, for long periods of time can aggravate and strain the soft tissues around the elbow and wrist. However, the use of sports massage and other techniques will help reduce the pain and increase the mobility in the arm.
Barbara was told by the sports massage therapist to ice the outside of the elbow after a day in the garden for 10-15minutes to help reduce the inflammation, and she was also given some simple exercises to do at home too.
After a course of treatment and following the advice at home, Barbara’s pain had dramatically reduced and she was able to enjoy her job without the fear of being in pain afterwards.
