Jane’s Knee Osteoarthritis: A case study

Jane is 68 and has recently been diagnosed with osteoarthritis. This causes pain and stiffness within the knee joint. Her main concern is the weakness and lack of stability in the knee. She is worried her knee will give way and she will hurt herself. Jane enjoys going on small walks with her friends along the seafront but has not been going due to her knee.

Her GP recommended getting some sports massage and exercises for the leg/knee to prevent this feeling. Jane has seen one of the sports massage therapists in the past so rebooked to see them again.
The sports massage therapist could see the affected leg was weaker and said to Jane that the use of massage and strengthening exercises will help reduce the feeling of the leg giving way. They explained that the muscles help support the joints so we want them to be as strong as possible to help stabilize the knee and keep it as mobile as possible.
